Phillips, Craig & Dean Let the Worshippers Arise Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig and Dan Dean have been working hard for more than 13 years, turning up regularly to prove themselves faithful through a musical ministry that has won them scores of faithful fans—not to mention 18 No. 1 singles, several Dove Award nominations and sales near the 2 million mark. Known for their ability to write songs the church loves to sing (including "Mercy Came Running" and "Crucified With Christ"), this trio brings an experience and maturity to today's modern worship movement, enhanced no doubt by their "day jobs" as pastors. The past two releases from the group have been worship focused and this CD marks the third installment of the trilogy, making this their tenth project. Let the Worshippers Arise is due in stores Sept. 28 and finds Phillips Craig & Dean continuing to deliver vertical worship that, above all else, seeks to connect Christians with their Creator. While Phillips, Craig & Dean have proven themselves consistent through the years, there is also much that's new in the life of this timeless group. Most exciting is their move to INO Records, where they again find themselves teamed with label Founder and President Jeff Moseley. "We began with Jeff 14 years ago at StarSong Records," Phillips explains. "He was instrumental in signing us when we were unknown. Jeff is the one who saw a future and we've never forgotten it." There is also a freshness these days to their sound, something they credit in part to producer Nathan Nockels, who has been with them throughout the entire worship trilogy. "We come from a real traditional 'get your part and belt it out' kind of mindset," Craig explains. "Nathan was able to get us to think outside the box." As a result, the new sound is decidedly more upbeat, while at the same time inviting those who hear it to enter into worship along with them. On Let the Worshippers Arise, that updated sound is applied to a mixture of original and familiar songs like "Awake My Soul," which Phillips wrote after being inspired by a revival at his church, and the Matt Redman classic "Making Melody." Another inclusion is a medley that mirrors the 1994 Dove Song of the Year, "In Christ Alone," which was originally penned by member Shawn Craig. In addition, the trio tackles "The Power of the Cross," which Craig wrote with Chris Tomlin, and "Because I'm Forgiven," another Craig composition. "These songs are selected because people can join in with their whole hearts and sing," Phillips says. Adds Dean, "With this type of project, we go in asking, 'How can we draw the audience closer to the presence of God?' We don't want it to be about 'these are great songs,' but 'this is a great God.'" While the challenge of balancing local ministry with a music career can make life hectic at times, Phillips, Craig & Dean still have plenty left to say and a calling they still hear loud and clear. "Everybody has a calling they must be faithful to. Ours is to call the church into a closer intimacy with Jesus and we do that through our music," Phillips says. "The topics of how we should love Jesus and what He means to us are inexhaustible, and singing of His attributes is an honor that will never be exhausted." Phillips, Craig & Dean — The Highlight Reel By the Numbers - Let the Worshippers Arise is the group's 10th release in nearly 14 years - The group has had a whopping 18 No. 1 songs, garnered several Dove Award nominations and took home a Dove Award for their participation in the special event album, "My Utmost For His Highest" - Phillips, Craig & Dean have sold nearly 2 million units over the course of their nearly 13-year career Did You Know? - These full-time pastors make it a priority to be at their respective churches' Sunday services so they have declared a virtual moratorium on Saturday night concerts. - Dan Dean pastors The Heartland Church in Irving, Texas, while Randy Phillips is the pastor at Austin, Texas-based Promiseland Church and Shawn Craig is the music pastor at South County Christian Center in St. Louis, Mo., a position he's held for 18 years. - Shawn Craig is finishing up his Masters of Divinity Degree at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK. - Randy Phillips hosts a weekly local TV show titled "Awakening" which airs on five stations in the Austin, Texas area, as well as nationwide. - Dan Dean's wife, Becky, was in a near-fatal car accident 18 months ago. Dan was with her through every step of her recovery, something that strengthened their relationship tremendously, and he's happy to report that she has miraculously recovered. The Story Behind "Let the Worshippers Arise" It was through Randy's weekly TV program that Phillips, Craig & Dean discovered what would be the title track for their new CD. The praise & worship-themed show sought to discover the best song from an unknown songwriter with Michael Farren of Texarkana, Texas taking home the top prize. Once the judging was over, the top five winners came to Austin and the winning song debuted on an "Awakening" broadcast. "When I heard him sing it live it was one of those moments," Phillips recalls. "I think when people hear it, it's going to cause them to reach out to Christ with a renewed passion like they've never had before." In Their Own Words - "As a pastor, I'm interested in people experiencing God—not just knowing about God, but knowing God." –Dan Dean - "There is something in a writer's heart that burns continually. As preachers, ministers and songwriters there always seems to be a message we have that is unique for each of us." —Shawn Craig - "Our local churches are our primary focus and what we do on the road is just an extension of what we do at home. The audience is our congregation." –Randy Phillips Media Contact: Lori Isaacs, The Media Collective, lori@theMcollective.com, 615.591.7989 For images or CD cover visit http://www.inorecords.com/media and click on "Artwork"

Bio:

A crumbling economy, wars without end, new health risks, security threats, and more. The media gives us a constant stream of reasons to be afraid. But what if God’s people shined a light of eternal hope right into the face of this world’s temporary circumstances?

That’s the compelling idea behind Fearless, the tenth studio album from one of today’s most respected Christian vocal groups, Phillips, Craig & Dean. Uniquely gifted and positioned in their dual roles as musicians and full-time senior pastors in three different U.S. cities, Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig and Dan Dean know well the current struggles people face and are boldly taking the opportunity to respond to them in life and song.

“We were talking about how afraid our church members are today,” recalls Randy. “A look at your finances right now might mean kids who wanted to go to college can’t, and so on. The fear that brings can be so paralyzing; it puts you in a cage. But then we asked ourselves, Shouldn’t believers who have the heart of eternity in them be different? That’s when we found our theme: fear less, hope more. We’ve written or chosen songs that say, Break out. Live large. This is an opportunity to show our power is in God alone.”

Shawn agrees on a couple of levels. “Fearless is a statement against the current tide of anxiety that’s being sold by the loudest voices in our culture,” he says. “But I’ve also been inspired by the stories of Christians in parts of India. A missionary our church supports tells us about many who are baptized there in spite of being shunned by family or even endangering their lives. That’s being fearless. We all need that kind of courage.”

To exemplify its concept, Fearless highlights a pair of decidedly upbeat and worry-free tunes about divine goodness. Asked separately about their favorite worship cover on Fearless, each man immediately mentions the band’s first single "Revelation Song," a tune born out of Gateway Church in Dallas. “Revelation Song” is a rising anthem in churches across the country that the trio has wanted to record for sometime. Here, the cut gets a slow-burning arrangement that moves from flickering U2-like guitars into a Passion-reminiscent eruption of praise.

“This song captures the moment of looking up into Heaven, peeling back the curtain of eternity so we can peek in,” says Randy. “If you keep your eyes on the Dow Jones or nuclear weapons in North Korea, you’ll always be nervous. Look to the awesomeness of God instead.”

Dan wrote “Let God Be God” in response to increasing global instability, reminding us that the One who holds the sea in place is watching out for every step I take. “This is the perfect time for us to say, Don’t panic. God is in control,” he insists. “Jesus asks in Luke 12:25: Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”

Similarly, “Counting on God” (a pop worship song by Jared Anderson) opens the album with a joyful and confident message about never having to worry what tomorrow may bring that Randy paraphrases as, “Get out of the funk. Embrace life! Run headlong into it. Start counting on God.”

There’s no shortage of artistic fearlessness on those tracks either. Although first known for softer inspirational hits, Phillips, Craig & Dean have authentically grown into edgier praise and worship territory in recent years. Just as a pastor hears the voice of his younger congregants, so do these vocalists respect the ideas of emerging producers like Bernie Herms (Casting Crowns, Natalie Grant) who guides the sonic direction of Fearless.

“I can’t even believe what Bernie did,” laughs Randy. “For ‘Counting on God’ he said, ‘Get in the microphone and growl!’ and had me singing through a magazine to get a weird vocal effect. I played it for my twenty-year-old who—as if she were surprised—said, ‘Dad, ya’ll sound good!’”

Dan followed suit on “Let God Be God,” letting out a convincing James Brown scream atop the funky rock arrangement. “I was just doing it to be funny, but it stuck,” he says. “We always want to try new things, and this was our first time to work with Bernie. We were very lucky to get him, because he has really become an in-demand producer.”

There’s no doubt Herms felt just as fortunate to work with Phillips, Craig & Dean. A distinct winning element of Fearless is the trio’s time-tested ability to write great songs and still be willing to interpret popular songs from other writers as well, bringing a consistent level of emotion and excellence to the project. Among the originals, Shawn is especially excited about “The Distance,” a soaring anthem of grace with heart-gripping words that read like a story poem. “The idea is that God couldn’t stand the distance between us, so He came near,” he explains. “There’s a bit of hyperbole in that, but the principle is true. God shows His love in spanning the canyon between mankind and Himself with the humble cross. I feel as strongly about that lyric as any I’ve written.”

Dan wrote “Nothing to Prove”—an adult contemporary, spot-on relatable account of what life really means—after a close friend and church member lost his father to cancer. “I’ll never forget the morning he called and said, ‘My dad is gone,’” Dean recalls. “It was brilliant and sad, and I went into the chapel with a heavy heart asking God what I could do, and out came this song with words that I hope can be said about me someday.”

Live with no excuses. Love with no regrets. Laugh a lot. Leave this life with nothing left unsaid. Make this world a better place. Don’t be afraid to cry. And when it’s finally time to say goodbye, there’s nothing to prove, nothing to lose, nothing to hide. Moving toward the worshipful core of Fearless, Randy co-wrote “The Spirit of God Is Here” with Paul Baloche (“Open the Eyes of My Heart”) about the privilege of prayer.

“If you love golf, talking to Tiger Woods would be an honor. If it were politics, maybe you’d enjoy speaking with President Obama. But to talk to God! That’s amazing,” Phillips says. “And musically, Bernie gives the song some Coldplay cool.”

In addition, a new version of the Hillsong United favorite “From the Inside Out” finds peace in amazement at God’s infinite power and intimate mercy. Sung with clear vulnerability, this performance of the popular song seems to capture the essence of the trio’s faith, display its humble wisdom, and, as ever, keep the listener wanting to hear more.

Always unassuming, Randy, Shawn and Dan are still surprised that what they began in 1991 continues to this day—some two million+ records sold and eighteen No. 1 singles later.

“If you told me we’d still have an audience after all these years, I’d be stunned,” says Randy. “That’s just God. We are so grateful.”

“It’s pretty amazing,” Shawn admits. “I count these guys as true friends and love this journey.”

“We were just working in our churches, doing what we do, not even really looking for this,” says Dan. “Then God said, Buckle your seatbelt. Have I got plans for you.”

And so Phillips, Craig & Dean continue to follow God’s plans as we all should. Fearlessly. ....
